Evelyn Bates (E. B.) is a 36-year-old female admitted to the hospital with complaints of left lower quadrant abdominal pain. Her abdomen is distended. She reports having diarrhea-like stools on one day and may not have a stool for a few days; then, she will have diarrhea again. The cramping pain increases after eating. She reports “some relief” with having a bowel movement. She has some nausea, belching, and anorexia and complains of being very tired. She states she “has lost 5 pounds recently.” She has been an accountant for 14 years and states that she is “relieved that tax season is over.” Her past medical history includes 2 pregnancies and 2 live births; she has a son age 10, and a daughter age 8. She is of Methodist faith and is a full code. E. B.’s vital signs are T 37.1° C (98.9° F), P 70 and regular, R 18 and unlabored, and BP 100/70. Weight is 45.5 kg (100 lb), height 159.6 cm (60 in). E. B. is reluctant to move around, stating that the abdominal cramping is worse when she moves. She states that she has not eaten today. Her abdomen is soft, with hyperactive bowel sounds (BS). During the assessment, E. B. excuses herself to go to the bathroom and has a liquid, mucousy stool.
