Scenario: Jane found out six months ago that she has recurrent metastatic breast cancer. She was originally diagnosed four years ago at age 55 and was eagerly awaiting her 5 year “cured of cancer” date later this year when she found a lump above her clavicle when showering. As she had the “first line” chemotherapy after her first diagnosis, to treat the metastatic cancer, Jane’s oncologist has been administering docetaxel through a port placed in the subclavian vein. Docetaxel injection is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat certain types of breast, lung, prostate, stomach, and head and neck cancers. She is asking for improved pain management to improve her quality of life. The half-life of docetaxel was determined as approximately 86 hours. Jane is so tired of having to come every three weeks to have her chemotherapy administration. She wants to know why she cannot come sooner to get her chemotherapy treatment. Jane also wants to know why she is having numbness and tingling in her hands and feet? Provide information to Jane on therapeutic index and toxicity.
