Background and Situation Background Katherine: 24-year-old female recent PN grad. She has been working in a temporary part-time position on the unit for the last 3 months. She is recently engaged and is worried about all of her upcoming wedding plans. She is trying to figure out her new role as a nurse. Delany: 42-year-old female casual PN has been working on several units. She has worked for the last 20 years in various casual positions in the hospital and in homecare. She has a 15-year history of smoking 2 packs per day and loves to party on her days off. She has been disciplined in the past for work conflicts with other employees. Situation There have been several sick calls on the unit recently. The union has mandated that extra shifts must be called in by seniority. Katherine has been picking up as many as possible to help pay for her school debt and her upcoming wedding. She has picked up 3 extra shifts this week. Delany has been missing many of the calls for extra shifts because she keeps misplacing her phone. Both Katherine and Delany have been callec into work for an extra shift today. Both Team 1 and Team 3 need a PN. Team 1 has a ratio of 4 patients to 1 nurse, and Team 3 has a ratio of 6 patients to 2 nurses due to the bariatric patient load. Katherine arrived early and was assigned to Team 1. Delany arrived at 7:35 and was mad that she was assigned to Team 3 as her back is sore this morning. She was very mad after she looked at the schedule and saw that Katherine had 3 extra shifts this week. The charge nurse is a “smoking buddy” of Delany’s and has scheduled Delany on the same hreak with him the same break with him. Delany has told Katherine that she is going for a break, and she needs Katherine to cover her patients. Katherine has 2 new post-op patients arriving soon and she is scheduled to take a break in 5 minutes. If Katherine does not leave in 5 minutes for her break, she will not get a break. Katherine is frustrated with Delany because Delany just came back from a break 30 minutes ago. Katherine tells Delany “No!”. When Katherine attempts to explain about the post-op patients, Delany interrupts and says “I’m going for my smoke break! I have more seniority than you”. Delany then leaves the unit. Katherine is very frustrated and begins to quietly cry. She feels very tired and really needed her break to sit down for a few minutes. She checks on Delany’s patients then goes to prepare for her new admissions. Katherine is very frustrated and goes to speak with the charge nurse. The charge nurse has also left the unit for a smoke break. Katherine then goes to speak to the unit manager about how she was treated by Delany. The manager listens to Katherine’s side then states that he will follow-up with Delany as soon as she gets back. Delany has left a note on the team desk asking Katherine to come and see her as she would like to discuss what happened this morning, Katherine sees Delany coming toward her and she motions for Delany to join her in an empty patient’s room. Delany enters and asks if it is ok to talk with Katherine now. Katherine agrees. Delany starts to apologize to Katherine for her behavior earlier in the day. “I am sorry for my anger and leaving you with my patients this morning when I went for a smoke break, but I was feeling so stressed about what’s happening at home. The charge nurse asked me to come on a smoke break, so I decided to go. Next time, when I feet tike t need a smoke break and we’re working together, I’ll come to find you to make sure you’ve had a break before I go on mine. Does that sound okay with you?” Identify the type of conflict and describe the contributing factors?
