Dose-response relationship is the relationship between the substance (drug)’s dose and the strength of the effects (response) it produces. Determining the dose- response relationship is key in understanding the adverse effects of any substance introduced in the body. The relationship is important in risk assessment, toxicology and pharmacology because it helps determine the efficacy and safety of substances like chemicals, drugs and other environmental agents. In environmental toxicology, the dose – response relationship can be used to determine the impact of pollutants. The National toxicology program (2016) documented the dose-response for different chemicals such as benzene, and dioxins. Research studies have revealed that most carcinogens follow a clear dose-response pattern, thus reinforcing the relationship in risk assessment (international agency for research on cancer, 2012). World Health Organization, (2000) emphasized the importance of dose-response relationships in risk assessments, and stated that such relationships are significant in identifying hazards.
