Question Workspace Use this activity to submit the assigned Thinking It Through Word document(s) to your instructor. Veronica Johnson, age 77, is a home health patient with a terminal illness. Veronica lives at home and is cared for by their spouse. Josephine Mitchell, a hospice nurse, visits Veronica on a regular basis to determine if the patient’s needs are being met, to educate the spouse on how to care for Veronica, to offer emotional support, and to help resolve any difficulties that may arise. Veronica states, “I am dying. I have known this for some time. I know it will not be much longer now but I have had a full life and I am not afraid.” But also states, “I want to tell my children how much I love them, but I don’t know how to do this as there seems to be a distance between us. I’m also afraid I will begin to cry and not be able to stop.” Josephine speaks with Veronica’s two adult children and determines that the children also wish to talk with Veronica to say goodbye, but are reluctant to do so because they are also afraid of starting to cry and not being able to stop. Veronica asks Josephine to be present when the children arrive to visit. When the two children arrive, both Veronica and the children repeat their concerns about starting to cry and not being able to stop. Josephine then says with humor, “Don’t worry about it, I’ll start mopping up if it gets too deep.” At that point, the children rush to Veronica’s bedside, and a very loving conversation takes place. What stage of the dying process is Veronica in? Veronica is in which life stage? According to Erik Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development, what is the conflict to be met at this life stage? Does it sound as if she has successfully met this challenge? Why or why not? Should the hospice nurse have been present during the meeting between Veronica and the two children? Was the humor used by the hospice nurse appropriate? What outcome would you anticipate occurring as a result of the children and Veronica openly sharing their feelings?
